About the online tutorial

Who is the tutorial for?

The tutorial is for residents of Liverpool City Council.

What is the tutorial about?

The tutorial is designed to give you a basic understanding of how to compost or wormfarm effectively. It does not go into the science of composting or any gardening information. Some councils regularly organise free Compost and Wormfarm workshops which are also a good option if you want to learn about it in more detail. To find out about upcoming workshops contact your local council, or visit the Compost Revolution project page.

What do I need to do to receive my prize?

First off, you must be a resident of Liverpool City Council.  Once you complete the quiz with a score of 100% you will be asked to register your name, address and e-mail and you will receive a confirmation e-mail with details on how to claim your prize. This e-mail will be vaild for two months after which you will need to re-do the quiz.  Council staff will be checking to ensure that only one prize is received per household.

What if I fail the quiz?

You can attempt the quiz as many times as you need to pass, and you can return to the tutorial to find the answers.

Is anything else required of me if I "Join the Compost Revolution"?

We encourage everyone who registers to tick the box to "Join the Compost Revolution". This does not mean you will be committed to anything else but you will be able to get more support and be invited to events and workshops that are related to composting, organic gardening, cooking and food sustainability. The Compost Revolution is also about building community and supporting neighbourhood garden projects so you will be invited to social events and get-togethers.

Can more than one person in my household do the tutorial?

Multiple people in a household can do the tutorial and quiz multiple times, however only one person in a household can register to receive the prize.

Can I do wormfarming and composting?

Doing both in a home can work well and you can do both the composting and wormfarming tutorial and quiz to learn how to do this. However, after you register you must choose either to receive a free Compost Mate Aerator (for your compost system), or 2000 worms (for your wormfarm system).

I live in an apartment with no balcony or garden space. What would be the best option for me?

You can keep a wormfarm in a garage or even a bathroom or kitchen. You will need to empty your worm liquid and solids occasionally and give these to a neighbour or friend, or find a nearby park or community garden to give them to.
Otherwise the best option is to drop your food scraps off at a communal compost bin or community garden weekly. Visit reduceyourfootprint to find out where these might be or post a question.

I don't require the offered prize, but I would like to be part of the Compost Revolution, is this possible?

Yes, complete the quiz and register ticking the box to receive the updates, you will be invited to Compost Revolution events and programs.

I already know how to compost, do I need to do the tutorial to claim the prize?

You don't need to do the tutorial but you do need to do the quiz to register to receive the prize. The tutorial is simple and quick and you can do it at your own pace.

Join the backyard compost revolution!

The Compost Revolution service is a fun way to learn about composting and wormfarming from the comfort of your own home. People all over Australia are joining the revolution and finding out how to create their own soil and fertiliser while reducing the rubbish they send to landfill.  You simply do a quick tutorial here on this website then claim your discounted wormfarm or compost bin. Once you have registered and paid, Boroondara Council will approve your order and we'll deliver it to your door free of charge within a few weeks.

The project began in the eastern suburbs of Sydney with Waverley, Randwick and Woollahra councils running hundreds of workshops teaching people how to compost and wormfarm. The response was huge and the resulting carbon and cost savings over landfill drove a decision to expand the programme online.  In 2012 – a year and thousands of households later – the programme was expanded nation-wide as a partnership between the founding councils and social enterprise Revolution Apps (the company that operates this web site on behalf of your local council).

Liverpool City Council

Approximately 50% of waste generated at home is food and garden vegetation. Food and garden waste produces significant quantities of greenhouse gases. To help divert garden waste from landfill, Liverpool City Council offers a garden waste service to residents living in single-unit dwellings in the Local Government Area. Your garden waste bin is collected from the kerbside and taken to Australian Native Landscapes where it is turned into nutrient rich compost and mulch. However, by having a composting or wormfarming system at home, you are not only able to divert your garden and food waste from landfill, but you are also able to reap the benefits at home! Composting and wormfarming are natural ways to recycle your organic garden and food waste. By increasing the number of households that compost and wormfarm in our area we can reduce our ecological footprint and improve our local environment and community.

The Compost Revolution includes the following components:

  • Prizes of either a kitchen caddy for your compost bin system or 1000 worms for your wormfarm for residents of Liverpool City Council who complete the on-line tutorial and quiz.
  • There is also the opportunity to claim a $50 rebate if you purchase a compost bin or wormfarm system (Conditions Apply) * Assistance for apartment blocks to home compost or wormfarm.
  • Workshops on related themes such as organic and sustainable gardening.
  • Questions and Answers section on www.reduceyourfootprint.com.au for people to ask (and answer) questions or for support for composting projects.
