Wormfarming

4Avoiding problems

Worm farms are fun to maintain and shouldn't become smelly or attract pests. If a problem does arise try one of these solutions.

Tips

  • Chop or blend food scraps so worms can eat them easily. Bedding should smell earthy; if it turns rotten, mix in dry materials like newspaper or leaves, or a little dolomite lime to balance moisture and nutrients.
  • If things really go wrong, the simplest fix is to empty the farm and start again with new worms.
  • Small worm farms suit 1–2 people. If you have more scraps than your farm can handle, add trays, upgrade to a bigger farm, or try a compost tumbler.
  • The best way to help your worms — and reduce waste — is to plan meals, use up what you have, serve sensible portions, and enjoy leftovers.

Did you know?

Worm farms aren't just home to worms. You'll see lots of other tiny creatures that are part of a healthy ecosystem, including spring tails, mites and billions of microorganisms like good bacteria you can't see.
