About the Compost Revolution

The Compost Revolution is making it easy for Australians to turn food scraps into rich soil and liquid fertiliser at home and reduce the amount of rubbish we send to landfills.  Because about half of what the average Australian household throws out is compostable organic material, using home composting systems significantly reduces the amount of stuff we send to landfills.  It also reduces our impact on Climate Change because food waste releases harmful greenhouse gases as it breaks down in landfills.

Revolution Apps, a social enterprise that operates The Compost Revolution online, works with local councils across Australia to provide residents with the equipment and skills they need to set up a successful home compost bin or worm farm.

The Compost Revolution started as a community initiative of local councils looking to reduce the negative environmental and economic impacts of sending residential waste to landfills.  In 2009, three councils in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs (Waverley, Randwick and Woollahra) launched a pilot program with funding from the NSW EPA. Revolution Apps partnered with these councils to launch the program nationwide in 2011.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is this website for?

Residents of Ku-ring-gai Council who want to recycle their food scraps, make soil and fertiliser at home and do their bit for the environment.

What is the tutorial about?

We have two tutorials, one on compost bins and one on worm farms.  The tutorials will teach you the practical skills of how to set up your bin or worm farm and keep it running smoothly - they are designed to give you a basic understanding of how to compost or wormfarm effectively, and do not go into the science of compost or any gardening information.

What do I need to do to get my discounted compost bin or wormfarm?

First off, you must be a resident of Ku-ring-gai Council. Once you complete the quiz with a score of 100% you will be asked to register your name, address and e-mail and you will then be presented with your discounted product offer and the payment process.

What if I fail the quiz?

You can attempt the quiz as many times as you need to pass, and you can return to the tutorial to find the answers.

Is anything else required of me if I "Join the Compost Revolution"?

No. The Compost Revolution is about building community capacity - we encourage everyone who registers to tick the box to "join the Compost Revolution". This does not mean you will be committed to anything, but you will be able to get more support and be invited to sustainable living events, festivals and workshops such as; organic gardening, home energy saving, keeping chooks and much more.

Can more than one person in my household do the tutorial?

Multiple people in a household can do the tutorial and quiz multiple times, however, only one discounted product can be received per household.

Can I do wormfarming and composting?

Doing both at home can work well and you can complete both the compost and wormfarming tutorial and quiz to learn how to do this. However, after you register you must choose to receive a discount on either a compost bin or a wormfarm.  If you wish to purchase both product types, your local hardware store will be able to help you with the product not ordered through compost revolution.

I live in an apartment with no balcony or garden space what are my options?

You can wormfarm in a garage or even a bathroom or kitchen. You will need to empty your worm liquid and solids occasionally and can give these to a neighbour or friend. Alternatively you can give them to a community garden, school, or local environmental group.

I don't need a new bin but I want to be part of the Compost Revolution, is this possible?

Yes, simply complete the quiz and register by ticking the box to receive Compost Revolution and Loving Living Ku-ring-gai updates, including events, festivals, forums and workshops.

I already know how to compost do I need to do the tutorial to get a free bin?

You don't need to do the tutorial but you do need to do the quiz to register for your compost bin or wormfarm. The quiz is simple and quick and you can complete it at your own pace.

How are products delivered to me?

Ku-ring-gai Council

Around 45% of the waste in Ku-ring-gai residential red waste bins is food waste, which will be transported to landfill where it rots without air to form harmful greenhouse gases.

Fortunately, organic material can easily be returned to the soil as fertiliser, compost and mulch. Compost improves plant growth, increases the capacity of the soil to hold nutrients and the ability of plants to resist disease.

Home composting or wormfarming is easy, fun and an important way of reducing the volume of these valuable materials going to landfill, cutting down on the associated greenhouse gases and returning nutrients back into the soil. By increasing the number of households that compost in our area we can reduce our ecological footprint and improve our local environment and community.

The Ku-ring-gai Council Compost Revolution is a part of Loving Living Ku-ring-gai and Council's efforts to reduce food waste in our community. Loving Living Ku-ring-gai represents Ku-ring-gai Council and the local community's efforts to enjoy, protect and sustain Sydney's green heart. Here you will find out about environmental and sustainability events, workshops, tips and stories from your local community to help you live well and more sustainably in the Ku-ring-gai community that we love.
