What better way to educate students on the fun, beauty, and responsibility of the cycle of life than by teaching them how to recycle food scraps into soil and fertiliser through composting and worm farming - and then doing the same at home?
The educational benefits of composting and worm farms run deep and wide. Composting gives students a living, breathing example of the systems thinking that underpins so much of contemporary sustainability.
Tutorials align with the Australian Curriculum from Foundation through to Year 12. In the early years (F to 2), observing worms, mould and decomposition brings biological sciences to life—living things and their needs, observable features, life cycles—and offers a gateway into science inquiry skills like predicting, observing and recording.
In the primary years (3 to 6), composting embodies food webs, ecosystems, classification and the ways living things interact with their environment; students can measure and track the food they’re diverting from landfill, which feeds into mathematics (measurement, data representation, statistics) and HASS units on sustainable communities and resource use.
By secondary school (Years 7 to 10), our tutorials help students engage with cellular biology, decomposition as a chemical and biological process, biogeochemical cycles like carbon and nitrogen, and the systems thinking required for ecological literacy, with strong links into design and technologies, and geography.
We also offer tutorials and tools to help teachers weave food waste collection and compost management into the curriculum.
